Water and Sanitation

Date: Fri Feb 10 2017

Location: Coffee Farm, Caldwell, Montserrado County

Status: Ongoing

In response to numerous and persistent appeals from local residents concerning the lack of access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation, this project was initiated to construct hand pumps in multiple communities across Monrovia and its surrounding areas. These appeals highlighted the urgent need for clean drinking water as a fundamental necessity for health and well-being. Many of the targeted communities have long suffered from inadequate water sources, relying on unsafe, polluted wells or distant water points, which often exposed residents—particularly children and women—to waterborne diseases and daily hardships. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, this intervention sought to provide a practical, sustainable solution through the installation of durable and community-managed hand pumps. The project involved a needs assessment phase, selection of strategic locations in collaboration with community leaders, drilling and installation of hand pumps, and training of local residents on maintenance and hygiene practices. The overall goal is to improve public health, reduce the burden of water collection, and enhance the quality of life for the beneficiaries. This initiative is a significant step toward addressing the broader water and sanitation challenges facing urban and peri-urban communities in Liberia, and it reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to community development, health and social welfare.

Summary

As a result of constant appeals for the construction of safe drinking water and other sanitation programs in their various localities, prompted the construction of these hand pumps in several communities in Monrovia and its environs.
